Brugmansia/Datura/Iochroma

 I know that the original post was done long

ago and have had some folks request that I

update this.  It's just general information for

those that grow them.  I have been growing

them since 1995 and there is more I can add.

I will say this, one needs to find their own

path and experience these lovely ladies of

the night to understand what they are all 

about.  Pointers were few and far between

when I first started out with these.  I do

thank those that helped me along my path.

The key is education and knowledge in

what you grow.  Each garden is different, 

so each gardener is different.

 Today we dipped in temps, the rain hit

and the wind kicked up again.  Not going

out until it's stops raining!  Getting tired 

of the high wind and watching the trees

sway!!

What a mess!

The winds hit over night and today will

be cleanup day.  Photos at first light.

They are saying winds at 40 to 50 MPH.

While out taking Sable out more branches came

down and she was pelted by pine cones.

The last photo shows what flew over the house

to hit the deck. 

You know what I'll be doing today!

2 1/2 hours to rake up the mess that

went all the way to the west fence!

1/2 hours to pickup and put away all the tools.

our 64 gallon yard debris can was totally full

and the smaller 64 yard debris can was 3/4

full and if I step in the can I'll have some room

for a little more.  Now when the rain stops

I'll be out to vac the area to clean up more.

Really had issues of breathing by the time

I was done.  

Still blowing so we will have more later, plus

the roofs and gutters will need to be done

A nice day to pickup pine needles,  2 1/2

buckets of pine needles and 1 bucket of 

leaves that have blown in.  Our leaves from

our tree were picked up months ago so this

is neighboring trees.  No one picks up their

tree leaves!!

Where Are Folks' Heads?

 A little after 8 AM tis morning some

guy was at our door with Campaign 

flier he was about to leave at our door.   

Excuse me!  Do not leave that at my 

door!!   Let me save your money as 

I won't vote for her were the words

I stated to him!  Then he tried to talk

about another flier he wanted to leave 

and I told him no!  Then the dog goes 

off and I told him I was a Community 

Activist.  I know all the issues and

do not want his junk.  Beside our 

yard is posted no trespassing so leave!   

No respect for anyone that shows up 

unannounced and at that time in 

the morning.  Nore will we vote for

someone that sends their folks out 

at that time.

Do not stop at our door!!

One man is dealing with the mess and has one message: “I told you so.”

Harold Steerman is fixing up a house in New Albany for his granddaughter.

However, he’s run into a little problem. His neighbor’s tree fell on the house during Wednesday’s storm.

Some would think if it’s a neighbor’s tree, they would be responsible for it. But that’s not the case for “acts of God” like this one.

“Several years back, a limb fell off and knocked our chimney loose and we had to fix it,” Steerman said. “We asked him if he had insurance, and he said ‘it’s not my problem, it’s your problem.’”

In some cases, the neighbor is right. If a healthy tree is brought down by an “act of God” such as a storm, the tree’s owner isn’t liable.

Write those letters to the property owners for your records and send to your insurance company.

Why are those letters important?

There's a good reason you should take photographs first in the event of a tree falling into your yard. Photographs may reveal signs that allow you to tell if the tree was dead or dying before it fell. Branches without leaves, severe trunk leaning, prematurely yellowed leaves, damaged roots, or missing bark can all be signs of the tree's weakness or disease, which could be the cause of it falling. These factors may not be revealed until after the tree falls, so photographs taken after the fact can be important evidence when it comes to demonstrating who was at fault. It's your neighbor's responsibility to maintain their property, and failure to do so means they may be liable for any damages to your property. You can preempt any mishaps if your neighbor's tree is crossing over onto your property, since you likely have the right to trim any dead branches if they're on your side of the property line.

Hybridizing Datura X Brugmansia

 

I was asked to explain this cross.   This is our

third attempt to cross a Dature X Brugmansia and

we know crossing variegated can produce albino

seedlings.  I have only had one that was grown

and produced a flower with a seedpod.  Those seeds

did germinate but sad to say none of them survived

the transplant.

There are some that state that this can not be done.

Wrong,  I have the paper work that was shared with

me of the 1940 work by a University back east that

did cross a Brugmansia X Datura and a Datura X

Brugmansia.  After reading the two studies I decided

why not try tissue culture plants?    So I set out to do

the cross with D. Missouri Marble X B. Shorty's 

Variegated.   I had a lot of seeds from the 3 crosses

and share these seeds with folks cross the globe.  

We called then Datmansia.

Last year I as gifted another D. Missouri Marble that

I again crossed with B. Shorty's and the above it what

the seeds produced.  We will see how they grow,

Wow, removing trees this time of year with 

wind and rain isn't going to impacted our gardens!!! 

I knew it would be bad but not this bad and they

only have one tree down to the fence level.

The whole yard is going to have to be vac

to get all the chips out of the beds.  Not clean

now!!

Now you know why I'm prone to muscle

spasms.....neighbor's tree trash our yard!! 

Another Letter

 According to the letter, they are going to 

weather permitting, remove the trees!

So we called our son and he stopped

by with his step son and they helped

cover the west garden bed.

All we can do is cover and hope for the

best after we have told them removal 

should be done when the garden is 

dormant.  Our plants have been coming 

up for the past month so we tried to

protect them.  

Who cares?!?!?!  

Our yard has been cleaned up for months!!

Making progress!!   I just love those

tree trimmers that just cut and drop, very

little was lowered by the ropes.  Plus

work being done in the rain!!   Then there

is the issue of protecting our property, if

you zoom in you will find a couple pieces

of plywood up against our fence.  That is 

to protect the fence??  Husband is home 

today to help out as I'm in my chair today.

After helping yesterday to cover, I know

today was a day of rest.  He comes in and 

tells me to shut off the heat pump as the 

wood chips are going into the unit.   He 

wants it covered to keep the mess from 

going inside.  They cut the tops off on 

the trees and just dropped them.....Got

Sable up from her nap!!  Boom!!
