Our Abutilon Collection

Several years ago I came across an
Abutilon also know as a Flower Maple
at a nursery.  I bought it as I thought
it would be something would enjoy.
Then my husband has an appt. at
a new eye Dr. office and they had
several in their office.  I was at awe
of them there and it really peaked
my attention.  Then an online garden
friend sent me seeds of them and
told me to try them.  I was hooked
but I couldn't find informations to
help me learn more about them.

These are in the Malvaceae
family and are considered evergreen
shrubs in Zones 8,9,12,-24 H1, H-2.
Partial Shade in hottest climates.
Moderate to regular water.

Native to warmer regions of the
world, especially in South America,
Brazil, Arizona, and California.
They are slowly showing up here
in the northern US and can be
grown outside during the summer
months and they make great house
plants in the winter months!!

In recent years we have been able
to find several different varieties
and our collection has grown.
We are alway looking for ones
we can add.   This past couple
years we have been trying our hand
at hybridizing and look for others
that would love to test our seeds.
We will offer a mix selection of
seeds if you would be willing to
grow them and send us photos
of what you get.

I moved all ours in a couple weeks
ago the smaller ones to the green-
house with the bigger ones to the
spare bedroom.

This past weekend I noticed that the
leaves on some were starting to drop
so it was time to strip them off and
see if any stole always came in.
Smart move as I found a couple
green worms!

The process is to remove a majority
of the larger leaves and leave the
smaller ones on.  That way you can
really enjoy the blooms.

2020 Garden Visitors!!

Yesterday I had a nice man on his bike stop
to admire the gardens.  Not much left to admire
but he stopped to tell me out yard caught his
eye while he road his bike.  I thanked him!!

He got to see the tail end of the garden as I'm
busy cutting back.  October 15th is our cut off
date to get the gardens ready for winter.  We
don't wait until the first frost!  Why wait and
be out in the cold doing what could be done
now?  It is to late in the season for blooms.

There are things that will be left but clean up
is best done early.  Things are disappearing
and being put into their winter homes.

I truly want to thank everyone that has stopped
by this past year as we really love sharing the
gardens.

Spare Bedroom!!

It is so nice to have a spare bedroom come
this time of year!!  The large Hibiscus tree,
the Clivias and Flowering Maples will share
this room for the winter months instead of
cramming everything in the greenhouse.

2020 Brug House Setup

I had a request for a post on the setup of the
Brug House for this year.  We had gotten some
6mil clear plastic last year and to our surprise
the plastic started to tear and crumble by March.
We have always gotten 3 years out of the
plastic but not last year.

Here is the frame and what is left of last years
Plastic after we emptied our all the plants.  This
year we are trying the table on the east wall and
the PVC shelf unit in the middle.  Our lights
hang on these and a fan on the top shelf for
circulation of air.

To our surprise when we opened the box,
the box states clear and the ad stated clear
but this is what we got.  To late in the season
to send back and wait for another so we
opted to use this.  Here you can see the
length of what is needed to do the walls of
the Brug House.

Next step is to fold it in half as we wanted
the walls to be double thick.

DH helped this year and he wanted to roll
the plastic up so it would be easier to move.
When I do this myself, I fold it.

He did the rolling out as I did the pulling,
this photo show we are halfway around
the frame.  I will add do this while it's
warm as the plastic will stay flexible.

Here is the plastic all the way around
and time to stop for the day!

The next step is pulling the plastic up
under the frame of the structure.  I
wanted only a foot inside so while
DH pulled up the corner I started to pull
what was needed and only had him
pull up the corners.  Once the bottom
is all pulled the next step is pulling the
walls upward.  After the walls
are in place it's time to work on the
opening or door area.

Let's back up here as some folks have asked
about the frame.  PVC makes for a great
frame, it's lightweight and easy to work
but we have found that the frame needed
extra strength on the corners of the
upright wall.  We found metal corner
pieces to replace the cracked corners last
year and let me tell you,  it was the best
investment!!  Not only for the Brug
house but the classic car carport next
to the Brug house got them.

Then some folks wanted to know
about the frame for the door and
how it's attached.  This is what
DH came up with.  Our youngest son
is whom helped design this structure.
It was expanded last year by just adding
a section to the back wall.

Here is the Brug House all completed,
we opted for just a single top piece as
we will be putting a tarp over the top soon.

The first things to go in were the epi cactus  as
they line the top frame to hold the plastic in place.

Yes, we will have a camera in there with
a thermostat to monitor the Brug House
from the comforts of our home.  We will
also have a 55 gallon barrel of water
inside to help with heat.

There has been some questions about
the lights, the Brug House is where we
start some of the seeds so we have two
shelves with lights.

Where as the Tropical Greenhouse we
only run one light top and center to light
the whole house.

We will again this year put tarps over
the tops of both but that will go up in
about two weeks.   Here is the glow
that is seen at night.

From just the few days we have it up
and running it stays pretty nice in there
during the day.
